that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give to you the spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of Him, (Eph. 1:17)
Paul’s prayer in Ephesians, chapter 1, is one of the most revealing and powerful prayers found in the Bible. We can learn much from this prayer and apply the spirit and heart of the prayer to our own lives.
Paul prays that the Ephesian believers would have a spirit of wisdom and revelation. Wisdom and revelation are spiritual things. Paul isn’t speaking of man’s wisdom and logic. He is praying because the spirit of wisdom and revelation doesn’t automatically get released in everyone. Many long time Christians seem to have very little spiritual wisdom and revelation. They don’t seem to grow and often don’t seem to care.
Paul prayed that ….
the eyes of your understanding being enlightened; (v. 18)
Once again, Paul would not have prayed for our understanding to be enlightened if our understanding was immediately enlightened when we were born again. Are you enlightened in the spiritual realm?
Paul prayed….
that you may know what is the hope of His calling, (v. 18)
What is His calling on your life? What is His purpose for you? Do you have a passion to know? Paul prayed for believers to know. God responds to faith filled prayer.
Paul prayed that we might know….
what are the riches of the glory of His inheritance in the saints, (v. 18)
Have you considered redemption from God’s point of view? His creation was lost to sin and darkness, but now through the cross has been redeemed. His glory is enriched through the harvest of sons and daughters made possible by the blood of Jesus.
Paul prayed that we might know….
what is the exceeding greatness of His power toward us who believe, according to the working of His mighty power. (v. 19)
It takes a revelation birthed from a prayer of faith to even begin to conceive of how great His power is toward us (in our favor). The promises of “abundant life”, “exceeding abundantly”, “yes and amen”, “freely giving us all things” and “every good and perfect gift” require spiritual revelation, knowledge and understanding.
Make Paul’s prayer your own. Believe God for a revelation of wisdom, spiritual understanding, and His power in your life. True victorious living begins here.
