“The earth also is defiled by its inhabitants because they have transgressed the laws, violated the ordinances, broken the everlasting covenant. Therefore, the curse devours the earth…” (Isa. 24:5-6)
As I read the headlines I am grieved for the obvious collapse of morality and truth at the highest levels of our government. However, this should not surprise us. Lofty ideals and even Biblical foundations for government are only as powerful as the men and women who govern. The power of sin to entice, ensnare and corrupt can be clearly seen. Self-centeredness, ego, lust for power, lust for fame and lust for money are all symptoms of the nature of fallen man.
As the Lord spoke through Isaiah so many years ago, the earth is defiled by its inhabitants. Spiritual and moral ordinances have been trampled underfoot. The curse of sin is devouring the earth. The curse of abortion has destroyed the lives of millions. The deception of misunderstood sexuality has blinded many more. Paul’s words in Romans are more relevant than ever.
“And since they did not see fit to acknowledge God, God gave them over to a debased mind, to do those things which are not proper . . . They not only do them, but also give hearty approval to those who practice them.” (Rom. 1:28-32)
In the midst of this darkness stands the Gospel of Jesus Christ. For all who love the light, truth and life, there is hope.
“For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish, but have eternal life.” (Jn. 3:16)
The only answer to the curse that is devouring the earth is spiritual. The only power stronger than darkness is Light. Only those who are in the Light can show the light. That is our call and commission.
“Let your light so shine before men that they may see your good works and glorify your Father who is in heaven.” (Mt. 5:16)
Let us stand for Truth and not lose heart. In the midst of a fallen world, the fields are still white unto harvest! (see John 4:35)
